Overview of Program:
The educator-guide will describe the emergence of organic farming in Israel in the past fifteen years, and discuss the cutting-edge innovation fueling the growth of this phenomenon. Many urbanites now enjoy fresh organic produce delivered to their doorstep, something that did not exist in the recent past. This module will explore the significance of this new development in the context of broader Israeli society. Participants will interact with a contemporary Jewish organic farmer at his or her farm in Israel.
Programs longer than three hours could include visits to other sites in the area that provide additional context to the topic, for example archeological sites relating to ancient agriculture in the same area.
Possible Locations: A small-scale organic farm in Israel. Ben’s Farm in the Eyla Valley near Jerusalem is one such location. Photos of this farm can be viewed at http://www.bensfarm.co.il/photos.php
Time: Three hours, excluding travel time to and from site.
Basic Program Timetable:
0:00-1:20 Arrive at farm and introduce the planned events and the topic of contemporary organic farming in Israel
Meet the farmer, and enjoy a walking tour of the farm
Question and answer session with farmer
1:20-1:40 Tasting of farm-fresh organic produce and bathroom break
1:40-2:50 Brief learning in pairs related to Jewish sources on organic farming and agriculture in relation to Jewish experience, followed by participatory discussion
Presentation by educator guide about organic farming in Israel and the significance of this farm in the context of modern Israeli agriculture;
2:50-3:00 Summary and concluding remarks
