The educator-guide will describe the emergence of globalized food in Israel in the past thirty years, and discuss what is fueling the growth of this phenomenon. This module will explore the significance of this new development in the context of broader Israeli society and with regards to Jewish teachings and global environmental issues, including climate change, rainforest depletion, and species loss.
Location: The Machane Yehuda Market (shuk) in Jerusalem and home of Jewish Eco Seminars director. In the event of rain, we will stay in the covered portions of the market.
Time: Three hours, excluding travel time to and from site.
Basic Module Timetable:
0:00-0:30 Arrive at shuk and introduce the planned events and the topic of Israel in the age of globalized food.
0:30-1:10 In pairs, explore the shuk through an interactive search for foods from twenty different countries. Participants will write down the name of the food and which country it came from.
1:10-1:30 Walk to home of Jewish Eco Seminars director.
1:30-1:45 Refreshments and sampling of foods from the shuk
1:45-2:00 Group processing of activity and listing of foods and countries of origin
2:00-2:10 Introduction to Jewish teachings related to food in the land of Israel
2:10-2:40 Paired (chevruta) learning about Jewish teachings on food in the land of Israel
2:40-3:00 Presentation by Jewish Eco Seminars director about Israel in the age of globalized food, based on Jewish sources, followed by participatory discussion and concluding remarks
